22 June 2005 – 25 June 2005, Canada

Friends of University of Alberta Hospitals and the University of Alberta Hospitals present the 2005 Society for the Arts in Healthcare Conference and the First Canadian International Conference on the Arts In Healthcare. With a population of 1 million, Edmonton is Canada's Festival City, the home of vibrant performing, theatrical and visual arts communities. Arts in Healthcare is blossoming in Canada, with a particular hotbed of activity in Edmonton. An Artists-on-the-Wards program has been in operation at the University of Alberta Hospital [UAH] for the last 6 years engaging adult patients at the bedside in music, literary and visual art. The UAH also houses the purpose built McMullen Art Gallery which hosts changing exhibitions that celebrate art, health and well being. Just across the street from the UAH, is the Cross Cancer Institute which also provides an "Arts in Medicine" program for patients, family members and staff. The innovative work of this well known program has been shared throughout Canada, and incorporated into a 5 day retreat program known as Tapestry. The Conference Program will include disscussions on the latest issues in the Arts and Health sector, with speakers from around the globe.
