The New Gatekeepers - Censorship and the Arts

The National Arts Journalism Program is hosting 'The New Gatekeepers: A Conference on Free Expression in the Arts. The conference will bring together journalists, scholars, artists, arts administrators, public officials, and others concerned about the arts in America today to explore the shifting frontier of free expression in the arts and search for workable solutions for the future. Participants include Lee Bollinger, president of Columbia University; Cass Sunstein, professor of law, University of Chicago; Todd Gitlin, professor of sociology and journalism, Columbia University; Marjorie Heins, author and director, Free Expression Policy Project; Louis Menand, author, The Metaphysical Club; Carol Becker, dean of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Margo Jefferson, critic, The New York Times; and many others.   • The Free Expression Story To illustrate the stakes of free-expression debates, the NAJP will present 'Evidence: A Selection of Banned and Contested Art”' in conjunction with the conference. Organized exclusively for registered conference attendees, this multimedia exhibit will feature more than 50 examples of art that has provoked censorship or conflict in the fields of online art, visual art, film and music.
