The subject in particulars
This course uses a value-based approach to the interaction between economic processes, the arts and culture. It includes an economic primer for those who want to know the basic economic principles.
The value based approach that this course covers is intended to anticipate, understand and deal with the big changes in the economy and in the cultural sector that are currently underway. The new economy appears to become a creative economy. The production of meanings overtakes the production of things. The creative industries are about the production of meanings. What, then, is creativity? How to engender creative environments? The cultural sector is about meanings. Why then, is it running the risk of being marginalized? What is the role of the arts? What will be her role in the future? What could cultural leaders do differently to improve the standing of the arts, and increase the necessary support?
Program
In this course participants will gain up to date knowledge about the functioning of cultural institutions, the creative industries, creativity, cultural policy and the new economy. They will learn when and how economic thinking applies but they also will find out about the value based approach that stresses the role of values, and points out the different logics for the realization of values. This gets us to discuss the special characteristics of cultural goods, the mission of cultural organizations (and how difficult it is to articulate a good one), cultural entrepreneurship, creative ways of financing and alternative ways of evaluation.
Participants will discover that the knowledge they gain and all insights will have relevance for their own practice.
The didactic approach is directed at
1. gaining awareness—of one’s own vision, of one’s values, of one’s need to know
2. exploration—of new or different domains of knowledge
3. grounding—crucial is the connection with one’s own practices, as professional, as policy maker, as student.
The grounding is realized by way of the own case that every participant brings in, through a discussion of other cases, and a concrete assignment.
There will be plenty of interaction as well as discussions in small groups.
The program that we offer here is the resultant of the input of our faculty and the feedback of alumni. We are pleased that so many alumni continue to stay involved, and that some are even pursuing a PhD in cultural economics or otherwise have adjusted their activities or practices in light of what they learned in this course.
The course will consist of a series of interactive seminars, group discussions, a few workshops, an excursion and discussions with prominent cultural leaders in Amsterdam.
