Japanese Art Scene Monitor,
17 August 2005, Japan

From the 10th Edition of Japanese Art Scene Monitor, Volume 2: Report Recommends Focus on Pop Culture, Martial Arts "The Council on the Promotion of Cultural Diplomacy, established in December last year by Prime Minister Koizumi to advise on how Japanese culture should be promoted overseas, has compiled and delivered its initial report. The Council, which included prominent art world figures including Tadao Ando and artist Tatsuo Miyajima, advised the Prime Minister to focus efforts on the propagation overseas of Japanese pop culture, including manga, anime, computer games and television drama. It also suggested the same treatment for Japanese martial arts. The Council recommended directing efforts in particular to the countries of Eastern Asia and noticed further measures were needed to: attract the attention of the "internet generation"; establish stronger networks between Japan-friendly groups; and further promote student and academic exchange. The government also announced that it plans to establish a permanent committee in autumn this year to oversee the implementation of these recommendations." The Japanese Art Scene Monitor is distributed free for anyone interested in keeping up with the visual arts and craft/design scene in Japan. Subscribe free, HERE.
