Order of Cultural Merit

President Dilma Rousseff and Culture Minister Marta Suplicy handed on November 5th, the medals of the 18th edition of the Order of Cultural Merit (WTO) to 41 personalities. The ceremony was held at the Planalto Palace in Brasilia. The former president, politician and writer José Sarney and Education Minister Mercadante also handed the medals.
Names like Abelardo da Hora, Orlando Orfei, Aguinaldo Silva, Alceu Valença, Elba Ramalho, Breno Silveira, Marieta Severo, Silvio Santos, Fafá de Belém, Almir Narayamoga Suruí, Rose Marie Muraro and José Sarney form part of the 41 recipients of the WTO 2012. Institutions such as the National History Museum and the Association Carnival Bloco Afro Olodum were also awarded.

Of the total of 41 recipients, nine were honored (posthumously): Mazzaropi, Dener Pamplona de Abreu, Hebe Camargo, Herivelto Martins, Ifigênia Rosa de Oliveira, Mário Schenberg, Plínio Marcos, Autran Dourado and Jorge Amado.
Luiz Gonzaga

The Order of Cultural Merit in 2012 honored singer, accordionist Luiz Gonzaga, also called Rei do Baião. This is the highest award that since 1995, is granted by the federal government as a way to recognize the outstanding contributions of people and institutions to Brazilian Culture,

On the website of the Ministry of Culture, when the nominations period is opened, any citizen may indicate persons or entities, whether national or international, that have provided significant contributions to the Brazilian culture.

Once concluded the nominations period, the suggested names are analyzed by the Council of the Order of Cultural Merit. The names approved by the Council are given to the President, who approved or doesn’t approve and publishes the names of all recipients in the Official Gazette. In the case of the WTO in 2012, the names were published on 6 November.
