Estonia suspends national cultural co-operation with Russia

Estonian Ministry of Culture,
28 February 2022, Estonia

The Estonian Ministry of Culture will not sign a cultural cooperation programme with the Russian Federation for the next three years. Estonia has an existing inter-ministerial cooperation agreement with Russia in the fields of culture and mass communication, on the basis of which specific activities are planned under bilateral programmes.

"Relations between Estonia and Russia have been difficult throughout the years, but cultural exchanges have been important for us. The war in Ukraine has hit cultural cooperation very hard. We understand that the entire cultural sector is suffering on both the Estonian and the Russian side, but the world community will not tolerate violations of international law, attacks on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of another state," stressed Minister of Culture Tiit Terik.
