In order to protect and develop the national film heritage, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Ministry of Culture of Georgia, the National Center of Cinematography of Georgia, JSC "Georgian Film" and "Georgian Film Distribution" LLC.
The document was signed by the Deputy Minister of Culture Giorgi Mirtskhulava, the Director of the National Center of Cinematography Mamuka Bliadze, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of JSC "Georgian Film" Khatuna Khundadze, the founder and director of "Georgian Film Distribution" LLC Aleksandre Gvarishvili, and the director of the same company, Otar Litanishvili.
Within the framework of the cooperation, large-scale restoration and digitization of the film heritage and its placement on a single digital platform will be carried out gradually.
It is planned to digitize up to 3,500 feature and up to 27,000 documentary and archival materials. The film material of special importance will be restored in accordance with modern standards. It should be noted that a significant part of the materials preserved in the archive have not yet been digitized, and some of them are the only copies and are at high risk of physical injury.
The initiative is based on international practice, including the experience of leading film archives in France, Great Britain and Italy, which ensures both the availability of film heritage and effective mechanisms for licensing, copyright protection and systematization of materials.
The creation of a digitalization and licensing platform will contribute to the development of culture and creative economy in Georgia.
