Children, Citizenship and Culture: A Symposium
20 March 2004 - Gilmorehill Centre, University of Glasgow
Unless political literacy is taught in an engaging way, it will be wasted on young people who think politicians are crooks. Those who do not understand the use and misuse of power in our society will soon become the victims of it.
Ted Wragg, ‘Wise words: how will schools tackle the challenge of turning our students into citizens?’
Guardian: Education Weekly (6 August 2002)
Incorporating academics, policy makers and creative personnel this day-long symposium is designed to encourage debate around how culture makers – and, in particular, those who work in television and in the performing arts – have addressed issues of citizenship in their work.
Structured as a series of themed panels, and opening a space for public debate, the symposium will identify links between the education agenda and issues of pedagogy and curriculum development, policy making as it is related to children, and to contemporary cultural debates in the media and performing arts.
