From Rule Books to Kite Flying

16 May 2002 – 20 May 2002, United Kingdom

The European Network of Cultural Administration Training Centres (ENCATC) is celebrating its 10 year anniversary at its international conference and annual meeting at Dartington College of Arts, UK in May. The conference program due to be published shortly will include a reflection on the organisation’s development in its 10 year involvement in intercultural arts management. The conference is provisionally titled ‘From Rule Books to Kite Flying: key issues in Arts and Cultural Management in the new millennium’. Three main topics will provide the focus of the conference: 1. What are our rule books and where do/did they come from? We all know what arts and cultural management is –or do we? What is the difference between arts management, cultural management, cultural administration and any other label that is used habitually? What was arts and cultural management before it existed as an academic discipline or as a recognized profession? 2. Homogeneity and Identity How in our work do we tread the demarcation line between fostering unity and celebrating diversity within and across our countries – can these two aims co-exist? 3. So, do we now dispense with the rule books and fly some kites instead? For those interested in exploring the above issues and who would like more information, please contact Hermann Voesgen – on behalf of the ENCATC Board.
