The one day seminar  "Urban Development and Culture for Social Inclusion in Latin America" will bring together government  representatives, urban planners, artists, private sector exponents, local community and civil society organizations from both the EU and Latin America to discuss and share ideas, needs, experiences and knowledge on the essential role of culture and creativity in urban inclusive management.

Over the last 20 to 30 years, there has been an increasing recognition of the relation of arts and culture with urban development.  Citizen's participation, the promotion of arts and creativity, the use of public spaces are crucial elements to be considered to address problems of social exclusion and violence in the cities.

This topic acquires particular centrality in Latin America where cities tend to be highly segregating  and where social and spatial arrangements - configurations in urban context have become an overarching issue creating exclusion and different types of threats  to human development, such as low proximity to wealth, services and opportunities.

Debates of the seminar will gathered around some critical questions such as:

How can public policies in Latin America face the challenges of the cities such as exclusion, violence, vulnerability through cultural promotion, access, participation and education?
What can governments do to better integrate the principles of cultural diversity and the values of cultural pluralism and freedom of artistic expression into their cities?
What kind of creative urban planning and governance would be necessary to make public spaces increase social cohesion and avoid exclusion?
What can be done to increase the citizens' participation to the construction of their own cities and equally enjoy their social citizenship and rights?
