Where is the heart of English culture?

“Has "mainstream" English culture lost touch with its rural roots - or does cosmopolitan city life embody Englishness?” “Are cities like Manchester, Liverpool, London and their culture now actually more English than Kendal and the Lakes?” Arts Council England, North West today announced the topic of its debate for art07, “Is the countryside more English than the city?” Held in association with BBC Radio 3’s ideas and culture programme, Night Waves, the debate will form part of the programme for the fourth annual regional spotlight on the arts – art07 – taking place in Kendal on Friday 8th June 2007.
