A total of more than A$500,000 in funding from the Australia Council’s New Media Arts Board, to be spread among some 40 recipients nationwide, was recently announced. Funded projects included a collaboration between forensic psychologists from the University of New South Wales and performance artist Denis Beaubois, looking at the role of the witness in the recollection of evidence, as well as a partnership between Tasmanian multimedia artist Lisa Roberts and a photographer / Antarctic whale researcher for an exhibition documenting their seven-week expedition to the frozen continent. Fifteen new media artists under the age of 30 years were also granted up to A$5,000 each for professional development activities, under the council's recently launched 'Runway' program. Board Chair, Michael Snelling, commented that the successful applicants demonstrated exciting and challenging possibilities for new media’s future. ‘Projects funded this round affirm that new media and interdisciplinary arts practice continues to expand and that artists are developing dynamic and substantial collaborations between and across traditional boundaries,’ he said.
