Spanish Culture Minister signs NGO reading agreement

The minister for culture, Carmen Calvo, has signed an agreement with a group of ten non-governmental organisations to promote reading among immigrants that reside in Spain. The ministry for culture and the NGOs will work together creating different activities and campaigns for the introduction and promotion of reading among the immigrant population. There will be awareness and information campaigns carried out, as well as workshops promoting reading and artistic activities relating to the world of reading. Reading initiation campaigns will be developed in regional areas with high immigrant numbers. The campaigns will be adapted to fit particular social environments. With the aim to obtain greater effectiveness, these campaigns will be disseminated in areas that are regularly used by immigrants, such as phone booths, associations, local publications, support networks or sporting clubs. The financial commitment for this agreement has realised through specific programs with each one being signed by the NGOs. The ten NGO signatories are:

  • Save The Children
  • Cáritas
  • The Hispano-Ecuatorial Rumiñahui Association for collaborative development
  • The Organisation Consortium for Integral Action for Immigrants
  • The Federation of Associations for Romanian immigrants in Spain
  • America-Europe, Solidarity and Cooperation
  • Humanity Foundation
