Heritage precincts shrink by up to 50% in 20 years

Over two decades ago, Mumbai introduced a landmark law identifying and protecting heritage in the city. The country's first urban heritage rule looked beyond grand buildings to neighbourhoods or "precincts"--clusters of buildings and spaces that had a unique sense of place, reflecting a historical aesthetic or way of life, such as the village of Khotachi Wadi in Girgaum and the 1920s-built Dadar Parsi Colony .Today , many of these precincts have dramatically shrunk due to expanded redevelopment incentives and rising land values, along with eroded heritage rules.
