Call for Papers: Two Fires Conference on Arts and Activism The Two Fires Conference will be held at the Two Fires Festival, a unique festival, celebrating and extending the legacy of the great Australian poet, conservationist and reconciliation activist, Judith Wright. The conference will run over four days, celebrating and nurturing the essential relationship between the 'two fires,'arts and activism. Co- convened by RMIT University's Globalism Institute and the Centre for Popular Education, University of Technology Sydney, the conference aims to bring together communities of people active in all the areas of concern that motivated Judith - including conservation, reconciliation, place education and the creative arts. We welcome proposals from artists, activists, community cultural development practitioners and scholars, educators and change agents alike. Key Themes: * The tension between art and activism * Place and environment * Having said sorry * Lighting the fires Keynote speakers include: * Tim Bonyhady, writer and historian * Veronica Brady, Judith Wright biographer * Julie Foster Smith, cross-cultural worker * Tom Griffiths, writer and historian * Rodney Hall, writer * Peter Hay, environmental studies academic and creative writer * Anita Heiss, poet and academic * Stuart Hill, Professor of Social Ecology at University of Western Sydney * Paul James, researcher and critical theorist * Val Plumwood, ecophilosopher and writer * Arnold Zable, writer and story teller * Mick Dodson, Chairperson of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. We are seeking proposals for conference papers (30 minutes including question time) and workshops (90 minutes). Proposals are to be received by 15 November 2004.
