02 April 2002, United Kingdom

Leeds University was the setting for a major conference on the creative industries in the Yorkshire and Humber region of the UK last week, where a website of the same name as the conference, 'Creative Yorkshire', was launched. The creative industries are considered one of the fastest growing sectors in the region by conference organisers, with the website’s core focus being to bring together the work of regional policy-makers, academics and creative sector agencies involved in local initiatives. Detailed information on the business characteristics of the sector, issues specific to the creative industries, skills and employment issues, case-studies, business development and advice, as well as current UK and international market information are also available on the site. In the UK overall, it is estimated that the creative industries generate GB£112.5 billion in revenue, £10.3 billion in export earnings and employ in excess of 1.3 million people. In Yorkshire and the Humber region, the creative sector is a key economic driver and has been selected by the regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward, as one of five industry areas to be targeted for investment. The one-day Creative Yorkshire conference, which took place on 27 March, looked at how the combined efforts of participating organisations and individuals could be mobilised to address the needs of the creative sector in a regional context. The website initiative is a collaboration between Yorkshire Arts, Yorkshire Forward and Leeds University. Information on conference discussions can be viewed at the Creative Yorkshire website, go to www.creativeyorkshire.com. For a copy of the Creative Yorkshire CD Rom email [email protected]
