The Executive Director of the Arts & Culture Observatory, a research initiative of the Center for Arts Management and Technology (CAMT) in the H John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management, will be the co-principal investigator (in collaboration with Dan J Martin, Director of CAMT and Associate Professor of Drama) and chief administrative officer, responsible for the operation of the Observatory, directing reviewing and supervising the work to ensure that the outcomes and deliverables as proposed in the mission and by the project''s advisory board are achieved. The Observatory is a new initiative that will serve as an ongoing, serious and objective source of detailed and comprehensive data, along with rigorous analyses of the internal and contextual conditions of non-profit, professional visual and performing arts organizations throughout Pittsburgh''s six-county metropolitan area. The long-term goal is to expand the Observatory''s services to include the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and, ultimately, for it to be the administrative center of a consortium of similar observatories throughout the United States. The Executive Director will oversee the development and implementation of the Observatory''s research and reporting agenda, where few precedents exist to provide guidance, and manage the project within the established budget constraints. This position is supported by external sources and the continuation of the position is dependent upon those sources. Efforts through additional fund-raising are expected to secure adequate resources to allow for the continuation of this position. QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in the Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences or the equivalent combination of training and experience; at least three (3) years of research experience, as well as one (1) or more years experience in a project leadership role; excellent analytical, problem solving and organizational skills; highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex data and explain their relationships and meanings to a wide variety of audiences; the ability to lead interdisciplinary collaborative project teams; and the ability to work under pressure, pay attention to detail, meet inflexible deadlines, and deal with difficult individuals while maintaining composure; in-depth knowledge of research and reporting protocol is critical; weekend and evening hours may be required; travel will be required. Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in the Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences along with knowledge of research techniques, or equivalent combination of training and experience; four years experience of research experience; relevant experience in arts research; and three years experience in project leadership or management.
