Health and vacation benefits Southern Exposure, the acclaimed non-profit San Francisco artist-run organization, seeks a dynamic individual to fill the position of ARTISTS IN EDUCATION PROGRAM DIRECTOR. The position will be available September 2002. This position may go to full-time in January 2003. Southern Exposure is a twenty-eight-year old, artist-run organization located in San Francisco''s Mission District. Southern Exposure presents diverse, risk-taking, and innovative contemporary art and related programs, and provides a forum and resource center for artists and the public. Programs include exhibitions, panels, symposia, performances, and educational programs. All programs are geared toward facilitating a challenging and energetic environment for debate on contemporary art and culture. Nationally recognized for its strength and diversity, Southern Exposure's programming creates an open and supportive environment for both artists and audiences. Southern Exposure's Artists in Education (AIE) Program stresses that art is a means of addressing the challenges, hopes, and complexities of urban teenage life. In its twelfth year, the AIE program offers over 450 Bay Area youth opportunities to excel in creative fields of study, to learn valuable artistic, critical thinking and communication skills, and to interact positively with peers and adult mentors. The AIE Program works collaboratively with neighboring youth organizations and schools that have little access to and limited resources for arts education. AIE provides critical, artistic, and cultural experiences outside of the normal school experience. Ideas and everyday issues including cultural identity, racism, community awareness, and the environment are explored through drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and video production. Offering artists valuable teaching experience and an opportunity to work with diverse populations, AIE creates opportunities, which are of equal value to artists, students, and institutions. The Artists in Education Program Director position offers an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in working in a creative and dynamic community and non-profit arts/arts education environment. Position Description * PROGRAM COORDINATION Coordinate AIE programs in schools and community based youth organizations, including meeting coordination with artists and necessary staff members, pre-program planning with artists, site coordinators and teachers, periodic site visits, documentation of all program, ongoing communication with artists and site coordinators during programs, and evaluation of all programs. * PROGRAM MANAGMENT Manage up to twenty-five separate artists, teachers and collaborators annually. Collaborate with artists, teachers, and site coordinators on overall program design and structure. Work with an AmeriCorps*VISTA member to oversee Youth Advisory Board. This board is made up of 8 youth and 4 adult members that review and evaluate the organization's education and youth-based programs. * CURRICULUM DESIGN Assist artists in designing curriculum and related activities for specific programs and populations, and provide direction on all aspects of artist's curricula, classroom management and course structure. * ARTIST AND INTERN RECRUITMENT Assist in recruiting artists and interns for programs. * EXHBITION COORDINATION Coordinate all AIE exhibitions and events, including locating exhibition venues, creating exhibition announcements, developing publicity, and assisting artists in mounting student exhibitions. * FUNDRAISING Provide leadership under the Executive Director's supervision with all fundraising efforts related to the AIE Program, including grant writing, compiling data and visual materials, gathering letters of support, grants management, writing final reports, researching new avenues of funding, and soliciting materials donations, and program sponsorship from local businesses. * VISIBILITY Collaborate with staff and artists on publicizing the AIE Program and all related events and exhibitions, including writing press releases, updating press kits, making press calls, and coordinating site visits for community members. * Assist in day-to-day operations of the organization, work gallery openings and events, assist in all related programs. Qualifications: Applicants must possess a Bachelor's Degree plus a minimum two years proven skills in administrative support, management, and program coordination. Masters degree in related field is highly desirable. Position requires teaching background, artistic background, strong community organizing skills, writing and computer skills. Incumbent must be able to show personal initiative as well as be able to work collaboratively as a member of a team. Must enjoy working collaboratively in an informal, creative, and fast-paced environment. Ability to work with various constituencies ranging from teens to teachers, staff members of community-based organizations, school teachers and administrators essential. Bilingual Spanish-speaking skills a plus.
