Position Available The Organization The Illinois Humanities Council promotes public appreciation for, understanding of, and participation in the humanities throughout Illinois. Based in Chicago, the IHC serves Chicago metro and every corner of the state through a great variety of programs and services. Each year, the IHC * funds hundreds of lectures, reading/discussion groups, exhibits, and documentary films through its grant program and speakers bureau, Road Scholars.* produces an annual series of humanities seminars for teachers and a variety of humanities activities, including an 8-month college level course, targeted to low-income adults, entitled The Odyssey Project.* works with youth-serving organizations to include humanities activities in after school programs through HYPe; and with students to encourage their understanding of international relations in Capitol Forum;* joins with other educational organizations, like the Smithsonian Institution and the Missouri Humanities Council to produce humanities programs in partnership, such as the Museums on Main Street and Heartland Chautauqua. A Great Opportunity for the Right Person A state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the IHC operates on an annual budget of $2 million derived from public and private sources. While enjoying significant public support, the IHC, a nonprofit (501 [c] 3) organization is committed to re-vitalizing its private funding efforts to support its expanding program. Responsibilities The Development Officer will create, articulate, and execute plans to increase the IHC's private funding. S/he will oversee development operating systems; identify, cultivate, and organize the solicitation of prospects and donors; conduct an annual direct mail campaign; develop sponsorships and foundation proposals and new strategies and sources of funding; create and implement recognition and acknowledgment strategies, and work collegially with and inspire other staff members who participate as assigned in development activities. The Development Officer reports to the Executive Director and staffs the Development Committee; and works closely with members of the senior management team, including the Director of Fiscal and Office Operations, the Director of Programs, and the Communications Coordinator. Requirements B.A./B.S. degree in liberal arts. Advanced degree preferred. Three to five years increasingly responsible experience in fundraising and project management, especially in Chicago metro. Excellent communications and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, to prioritize work, maintain deadlines and ensure quality of work. Ability to work collegially with staff. Computer literacy word processing and database management. Understanding of the liberal arts. Development Officer is a full-time position with benefits.
