The Arts Council of England (ACE) has recently announced what is billed as a ground-breaking project, championing new work in the area of cultural diversity. The original working title for the initiative, Diversity Project, has been replaced by the brand Decibel, aimed at raising the voice of culturally diverse arts in Britain and informing future policy in the field. Specifically concentrating on the ethnic diversity that resulted from post-War immigration, Decibel will take a focus on arts and artists from African, Asian and Caribbean backgrounds, and is designed to highlight ACE's commitment to cultural diversity, both by profiling practice and developing opportunities for work in the mainstream. The project's Director, Sita Ramamurthy, commented that it is a positive move forward on the part of the Arts Council. ‘I am confident Decibel will act as a catalyst for change and will make a significant contribution towards strengthening cultural diversity in the arts,’ she said. The first public activities are scheduled to begin in May 2003.
