Scottish councils awarded Cultural Co-ordinators

Following a previous report in the IFACCA bulletin, Scottish Arts Council (SAC) has recently announced the local councils that are to receive funding for Cultural Co-ordinators posts.
Supported by the Scottish Executive and administered by the SAC, the new staff are aimed at ensuring each local education authority can develop new opportunities for pupils to experience and participate in the arts.
Under the scheme, school Cultural Co-ordinators are to seek out opportunities for students to participate in all types of arts activities, from viewing a play to visiting an exhibition, or developing pupils' own skills in art and performance. This may also include the identification of opportunities to develop a creative approach toward other subjects on the curriculum.
SAC has noted that local authorities have prepared bids for funding based around the needs of the schools in their area. Successful projects include eight Cultural Co-ordinators appointed across the Highland Council area, each dedicated to building partnerships with arts providers in their area.
In Falkirk, the Cultural Co-ordinator will work with four clusters of schools, secondary and associated primary schools, and will co-operate with specialist arts teachers in developing good practice and linked opportunities within the curriculum.
In the Western Isles, the co-ordinators will develop a mixed media project in partnership with local history societies, while also supporting a storytelling project in Gaelic and English.
In Edinburgh, four posts will work with the Education Department to develop artists’ residencies in schools, bringing visiting arts companies into schools and establishing the city’s Arts Unit as a ‘one-door’ provision for arts and education.
Syliva Dow, SAC's Head of Education, commented that the posts have offered ‘an opportunity for many councils to think clearly about the range and type of arts provision within their schools and how they can develop those proposals further.’
