The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) recently launched Jamaica's Journey of Independence (1831-1962), a book commemorating the country’s 40th anniversary of Independence. The book, geared towards young Jamaicans, encapsulates the story of struggle, triumph, and the on-going effort and vision of a people who look beyond the immediate, the material and the future. Education, Youth and Culture Minister, Senator Burchell Whiteman, who spoke at the launch, has commented that Jamaica's Journey of Independence (1831-1962) 'is a book which will stimulate people to read, and being a reading society is somewhat different from being a literate society. Anything that encourages our people to read and to receive the benefits of reading and interpretation is welcomed.' Whiteman has also noted that production of the book showed that the JNHT was not only concerned with buildings, artistic and cultural heritage, but also with intangible heritage. 'The ideas, the story of our people… it is important that we should preserve our heritage in all its forms,' he added.
