The Chilean National Arts Endowment (FONDART) is currently offering fifteen residencies to Chilean artists as part of the Third Sculpture Symposium, to be held in Putaendo, September 13 to October 30. Offered to twelve sculptors, two muralists and one juvenile art educator, the residencies are aimed at bringing together prominent sculptors who, in collaboration with novel artists, will contribute to the expansion of the Cart Cemetery Sculpture Park. The sculptures that are contained in the Sculpture Park are located on an open terrace, where they share space with herds of goats, on the outskirts of a farming town. The works of art are said to form part of the daily lives of the 10,000 inhabitants. FONDART has commented that the process of artistic creation, which takes place outdoors, allows townspeople to develop a personal relationship with the works of art. They note that works created in this manner are not simply the expression of the artists aesthetic impulses, but are also rooted in environmental, social and cultural issues. Following the symposium period, the artists leave and Putaendo returns to its longstanding activities, with the sculptures remaining. In conjuction with the symposium, current muralists-in-residence will continue the work previously done by artists in the streets of Putaendo, with further artistic activity to be organised with the participation of the local young people.
