Chair of the Board - Film London

Film Council,
01 October 2002, United Kingdom

Film London is the new single strategic agency for the development of film in the capital. The new agency will be strong, authoritative, and independent, acting as an advocate for film culture and industry, meeting the needs and aspirations of all Londoners. The agency will invest in the commissioning and funding of production and industrial development initiatives across London and lead the drive to develop the status of the city as a world-class film location. Working with cinema and new media: The agency will work to develop a cinema culture that reflects the full diversity and possibility of London and creates opportunities for people from all communities to use and enjoy moving image technologies profitably and creatively. Whilst the primary focus for the agency will be film, there will be areas of its work where partnerships operate across the boundaries with television and with new media. Funding and partners: The new agency will be funded by the FILM COUNCIL and other strategic agencies for the development of the London and of the industry. It will distribute National Lottery funds for film, and will work in partnership with the Mayor of London, LDA, Skillset, local authorities, broadcasters, the film industry and many others. Whilst budgets and structures are yet to be finalised, the agency will have the resources, staff and partnerships to equip it to make an immediate substantial impact on the sector and on London. Vacancies: The agency will be one of the most high profile cultural and industrial development initiatives in London and the opportunity now exists to appoint a talented, experienced and influential leadership team of Chair, Board and Chief Executive. The role of the Chair: The new agency will be a company limited by guarantee, and will be led by a Board that represents all aspects of the film work of the agency. The Chair of this board will have a key responsibility for the establishment of the new agency, securing for it both resources and attention and defining its early direction. Working with funders and partners (The FILM COUNCIL, the Mayor of London, LDA, and Skillset), the Chair will lead the definition of priorities and relationships with the sector, central, city-level and local government and the communities of London. The work of some existing film agencies in the capital will be merged into the agency, and the Chair will work to effect this transition successfully. The Chair will oversee the recruitment of the Board, and the establishment of a team to run the agency, and will define the style and approach the new body takes to its work. Job Description: The holder of this position will chair the Board of the agency and will work with the Chief Executive to lead the agency and represent it at city, national and international level. Externally, the position will be primarily concerned with advocacy and representation of the interests of the agency and of the sector that it serves. Within the agency the Chair will ensure the development of strategy for the agency; ensuring that the Board of the agency, and its funders, are informed, briefed and involved in its work and that the Chief Executive and staff are supported in their work toward the objectives of the agency.
