An international group of librarians and publishers have issued a statement re-asserting the importance of freedom of expression for democracy, creativity and prosperity. The statement was a agreed to by a joint Steering Group, established by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and the International Publishers Association (IPA). The statement reinforces the need to establish legal frameworks in print and electronic environments in accordance with international standards which guarantee the freedom of expression. Alex Byrne, Chair of IFLA has declared that; ‘In a world in turmoil, it is vitally important for global understanding that all people should be able to express their views and read and see the views of others.
