The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) has recently welcomed a range of options proposed by the National Museums and Galleries of Wales (NMGW) aimed at strengthening the future exhibition of Welsh art. Following a period of close discussion between the two organisations, the NMGW consultation ‘Views of the Future’ has produced three main options for the future display of art. Among the suggestions made by the NMGW is that the national collection should be available for display at regional galleries across Wales, extending its reach to a broader audience. Other aspects of the proposal involve establishing a Digital Online Gallery, which would further enhance the accessibility of the national collection, and the building of an additional permanent space to house the national collection, possibly as an extension of the NMGW’s Cathays Park site. ACW Chairman Sybill Crouch, has commented that the Council strongly supports the initiatives prosed by the NMGW, however they also feel that a contemporary gallery for modern Welsh art should be established to showcase the wealth of contemporary art created by Welsh artists. 'There’s a definite buzz surrounding the Welsh visual arts scene at the moment, and recent developments such as the establishing of the Artes Mundi Prize, and Wales’ first involvement in the Venice Biennale of Art, underline the need to secure future display provision of the highest standard for Welsh art,' she said.
