Background OPERA America's Information Service Department is the primary source for authoritative artistic and managerial information for opera professionals and the general public. The Information Service Director works collaboratively with staff and members to develop the most effective means for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating a broad range of information resources. Additionally, the Information Service Director acts as the primary editor and publisher of all OPERA America publications. Skills Required * Advanced managerial skills, including work with budgets, departmental communications, and project management * Knowledge of opera required * Superior written and oral communication skills * Technical experience with computers, web pages, and Internet databases * Well-developed customer service skills * Willingness to travel Specific Goals and Responsibilities Directs entire department. Such work includes supervising and partnering with a team of three staff members (Information Service Manager, Publications Coordinator, and Online and Network Services Manager) to develop a vision and planning calendar for the Information Service Department. Works closely with other department Directors and President/CEO on specific projects. Represents the Information Service Department at Board meetings and Directors meetings. Creates and manages department budget in conjunction with the Director of Operations and President/CEO. Negotiates with and manages Information Service consultants and contractors in conjunction with the Online & Network Services Manager and the Information Service Manager. Designs and administers surveys to gather financial, operational, and artistic information crucial to understanding the health of the field. Analyzes data gathered; designs and distributes summaries and reports. Publishes and does senior editing for all OPERA America publications, working closely with the departments that produce the publications. Creates plans to improve OPERA America's ongoing efforts to harness the Internet as the organization's primary communication platform in conjunction with the Online & Network Services Manager and other staff members. Develops and implements guidelines for the organization, preservation, and extension of OPERA America's and Central Opera Service's historical information. Oversees the management of OPERA America's in-house library. Maintains and improves OPERA America's excellent responses to inquiries from members and the general public. Assists OPERA America staff with research and data collection related to specific professional specialty requirements. Collaborates with representatives of other arts service organizations to develop improved and coordinated research initiatives. The ideal candidate would also possess graphic design skills to layout and design publications and marketing pieces. Desired software skills: WordPerfect, PageMaker, Adobe PhotoShop, HTML, Access, WAV technology. Reporting Structure and Evaluation The Information Service Director reports to the President/CEO, works with the Director of Operations in planning and decision making for the Department, and is expected to interact closely with all department Directors. An initial evaluation will occur after six months and thereafter annually at the close of the fiscal year. The Information Service Director supervises the Information Service Manager, the Online & Network Services Manager, and the Publications Coordinator.
