The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) is entering the next stage of development towards establishing the Welsh Language Theatre Company, following an announcement seeking applications for board members. The ACW is working with the Welsh-language theatre sector to establish an independent production company to deliver contemporary Welsh Language theatre across a variety of genres, which aims to appeal to a mainstream audience in large and medium-scale venues around Wales. The ACW has earmarked £50,000 towards the establishment of the company and made a bid to the Welsh Assembly Government for additional funds to support the company from 2003-2004 onwards. Grants to the value of £200,000 have also been awarded to produce two major Welsh stage productions to tour in 2003. Sgript Cymru will produce a stage version of Amdani, based on the Bethan Gwanas novel and television series; while Theatr Gwynedd aims to produce Dan-y-Wenallt, a stage production based on Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood.
