The Arts Development Council in Hong Kong held a recent retreat aimed at increasing awareness of intellectual property issues. The three-hour retreat was held at the ADC's administration office, and featured key speakers Pancy Fung and Elton Yeung. Fung, who is the Assistant Director of the Intellectual Property Department, introduced the Copyright Ordinance and highlighted the different types of artistic works which are automatically protected once created. These include, she noted, works of literature and music, as well as visual art and those of dramatic value. Sound recordings, television and radio broadcasts, cable programs and webpage images are also protected. In his address, Elton Yeung, of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong, emphasised the importance of intellectual property laws. He pointed to recent growth in Hong Kong's arts scene as evidence of this importance, and lamented the fact that Hong Kong presently lags behind other western countries in regard to overall awareness of copyright issues.
