The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) have recently honoured 13 organisations across the US and Mexico for their outstanding work with youth through the 'Coming Up Taller' Awards. Valued at US$10,000 each, the awards recognise excellence in community-based after-school arts and humanities programs which are deemed to encourage young people's creativity. They also celebrate the contributions of historians, scholars, librarians and visual and performing artists to families and communities, through the mentoring and teaching of children. In recognising the contribution of the arts in the development of children, NEA Senior Deputy Chairman, Eileen Mason, said: 'Whether through dancing, painting, or writing, young people not only gain competence in a specific artform, but have the opportunity to learn valuable life and job skills that can help them succeed in school, at work and in their communities.'
