The Arts Council for Chautauqua County (ACCC), located in Jamestown, New York, seeks to fill an immediate need for a dynamic leader to guide the county-wide organization in its fourth decade of service and leadership in the arts.The full time Executive Director (ED) position coordinates all administrative, organizational, and artistic functions of the ACCC and its sister organizations, the Reg Lenna Civic Center (RLCC), and the Civic Center Development Corporation (CCDC). Each organization has its own board of directors and shares a combined staff of 15 with a total operating budget of $1.5 million and real estate holdings valued in excess of $7 million. The ED reports directly to the Arts Council’s 12-member board. Each of the other two organizations has a representative on the Arts Council Board. All three organizations are 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporations. ACCC Mission Statement: “Recognizing that a community which encourages, supports, and fosters the Arts, empowers its citizens to think, work and live creatively, the Arts Council for Chautauqua County works to provide an environment in which the arts thrive.” In carrying out its mission, the Arts Council has been recognized for its innovative and creative approach to the arts, economic development, and community revitalization. Programs and services include (but are not limited to) the United Arts Appeal, which annually raises and distributes $250,000 to 10 member arts groups; a decentralization program making grants to arts organizations; a projects pool making grants to individual artists; the Arts as Learning Program that partners with schools to develop and implement multidisciplinary arts-integrated curricula; land banking and development of downtown buildings; and The Lofts, affordably priced downtown housing for artists.Reg Lenna Civic Center (RLCC) Mission Statement: “We are first, a community facility and second, a sponsor of events. Towards these two goals we offer a first class theater and civic center. The Reg Lenna Civic Center is to be operated as a high quality, efficient, user-friendly, financially responsible, community-oriented facility available to anyone for any lawful use subject only to reasonable operating conditions. The center will present high quality, financially responsible, varied programs for the enjoyment and understanding of our audiences. The programs will complement and not compete with other community events. Recognizing that an active, vital downtown is critical to a healthy community and a healthy civic center, the board of directors will actively stimulate projects that add to the diversity and personality of downtown Jamestown. Our guiding principle for management and administration is to be aggressive, energetic, and responsible leaders in the delivery of our mission.” The Civic Center Development Corporation (CCDC) Mission Statement: “To develop and manage properties in support of the civic, cultural, meeting and educational goals of the Reg Lenna Civic Center, Inc.”The ED works with the Arts Council Board of Directors to initiate and monitor the planning, development, and management of all operational components. Responsibilities include the establishment and maintenance of all local, statewide and federal partners, constituencies, funders, clients, and interested others. In addition, responsibilities include the development, implementation and documentation of all program projects including grant proposals and administration. The ED leads the development and management of the annual operating budget, and works with the Arts Council Board to secure funding to meet program needs. This leader will serve as an advocate at local/state/federal levels for arts education issues.A strong background in the arts, both academic and practical, is expected. The ED must have experience working with community arts groups as well as boards of directors. Must show proven fiscal ability to develop and manage budgets, and must have strong communication skills, both verbal and written. The ED must have the vision, creativity, and experience to develop a long-term strategic plan for the Arts Council as well as the arts in Chautauqua County. Experience in the selection, booking, and production of cultural/artistic events is a definite asset. The ED needs the ability and depth to motivate and manage a staff of professionals, as well as volunteer workers. A creative passion for the arts, coupled with prudent management skills, is a challenging but essential combination. A dynamic and flexible leader of the highest ethical standards must marry negotiating and marketing skills to lead the organization. Ultimate responsibility for property management is an added dimension, requiring risk-management skills and technical savvy. Recognizing the arts as a tool for community building, the successful candidate will develop a vision and pursue opportunities to support, improve, and integrate the arts in Chautauqua County. Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
