Arts Council of Wales announces artists for Venice

The Arts Council of Wales has announced that Welsh artists Paul Seawright, Cerith Wyn Evans, Simon Pope and Bethan Huws will participate in Wales' inaugural appearance at the Venice Biennale in 2003. The announcement of the selected artists follows the notification last month that Wales had secured an exhibition venue, the former Dreher Brewery on the island of Giudecca – used to display the works of former Turner prize finalist, Mike Nelson, at the 2001 Venice Biennale. Wales' representation at the Venice Biennale has been made possible due to the suport of the Arts Council, in addition to assistance from the Contemporary Art Society of Wales, the British Council and a number of other organisations. Arts Council Chairman, Sybil Crouch said that the biennale was an opportunity to raise the international profile of the country's visual arts sector, and that the event would 'enhance Wales' reputation as a cultural nation.'
