The Scottish Arts Council has welcomed the Scottish Executive's announcement of a total of £17.5 million over the next three years, which is expected to contribute to the removal of instrumental and singing tuition charges for children. The announcement follows the publication of a joint Scottish Arts Council, Youth Music and Musicians’ Union audit into the national state of youth music practice. The publication, entitled What’s going on? – A national audit of youth music in Scotland, gives an insight into the current geographical, financial and economic spread of music tuition throughout the country, and identifies some of the gaps within this provision. The audit found that fees for instrumental instruction and access to instruments were among the barriers to young people’s participation in musical activity. Following the funding announcement, Scottish Arts Council Director, Graham Berry, said that the council would work with local authorities and educational institutions to develop a national youth music strategy for Scotland. ‘[The audit’s] recommendations are challenging yet achievable,’ he commented. ‘The Scottish Executive’s announcement is a commitment to our young people, who, despite the obstacles, continue to seek out the chance to learn and participate in music.’ For more information on the Scottish Arts Council CLICK HERE.
