The Chilean Government has announced that the FONDART 2003 competition will take place after a number of revisions. FONDART is a state-financed fund for the arts which aims to develop the areas of arts and culture in Chile, and to provide resources for artists through public competitions. Since its creation in 1992, FONDART has contributed to the financing of 5,199 projects, to a value of more than 19,690 million pesos. The competition, which is co-ordinated by the Ministry for Education, is presently under review, with both the rules of the competition and the election process regulations being studied by the Minister for Education. Regulations for FONDART 2003 will allow arts groups to compete in local competitions in their particular region of the country, as well as vie for a place in the national competition. The national competition is open to all Chilean artists, regardless of the region in which they live. The competition this year boasts a total budget of 4,685 million pesos, which has been designated through the public sector budget laws. The funds will be divided between the national and regional competitions. In other changes, FONDART 2003 will provide scholarships for artists and cultural agents, to allow them to travel either locally or internationally so as to further their artistic development.
