The US$250 million restoration of Angola’s National Museum of Anthropology will be financed by the Portuguese Investment Bank, Museum Director Mateus Cavula announced recently. The National Museum of Anthropology, which holds 400 culturally significant objects and artifacts and is home to collections of historical documentation, has been without restoration since it first opened in 1976. Mr Cavula said that the funding would contribute to the restoration of the museum’s roof and walls. In other news, Mr Cavula also announced a decline in the museum’s visitor numbers. The museum now receives an estimated 2000 visitors each month, in contrast to 2500 visitors each month in 2002. It is believed that the decline can be attributed to the abolition of an agreement made between the museum and the former Culture Minister. Under the agreement, school students were permitted to visit the museum at any time of their choosing. For more information in French, CLICK HERE
