Following the announcement that the British city of Liverpool would be the 2008 European Capital of Culture, Arts Council England Chief Executive, Peter Hewitt, said the decision would have a ‘huge bearing’ on how the arts in England are seen throughout the world. ‘We are delighted that Liverpool has been chosen,’ Hewitt said. ‘This is not only a boost to Liverpool and the North West, but a big win for the arts in this country.’ Hewitt added that, in the lead up to 2008, Arts Council England would work with Liverpool to develop a program of arts and cultural activities. ‘In 2008, Liverpool and England will be in the spotlight,’ he continued. ‘We must show the full wealth of this country’s artistic potential in all its towns, cities and regions.’ For more information on the Arts Council England, CLICK HERE.
