Resource, the UK council for museums, archives, and libraries, has appointed a Cultural Diversity Development Officer. Naila Durrani will take on the responsibility of providing advice to museums, archives and libraries, as well as to the government and other agencies, on improving and developing services and collections for people from minority ethnic backgrounds. Previously, Durrani worked for Hackney Libraries, where she initiated a number of projects of special interest to people from black and ethnic minority communities, and in response to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers. She has also worked for the University of Nairobi Library, UNESCO and UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme). Commenting on her appointment, Durrani said: ‘The UK is going through a period of rapid change with the “globalised world come home”, with people from all over the world making this country their home,’ she said. ‘This, together with exciting developments in information, communication, and technology sectors, makes it possible for the first time, to meet the cultural needs of all in an inclusive way,’ said Durrani. Sue Wilkinson of Resource said it was important to make the collections in museums, archives and libraries accessible to everyone. ‘Services and collections need to be tailored to suit the needs and requirements of a diverse range of users,’ she said.
