15 July 2003, United Kingdom

Arts Council England is currently inviting feedback on its Racial Equality Scheme. The Racial Equality Scheme, published in June 2003, outlines the obligations the arts council is required to fulfil under The Race Relations Act 1976, amended by the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000. The Act places a general duty on all public authorities to promote race equality. The arts council’s Racial Equality Scheme acknowledges the problem of racism and recognises the diverse cultures that make up Britain’s population, stating that one of the council’s main goals is to encourage the preservation of cultural activities belonging to people of different races.
