Head of Arts, Paris

British Council,
15 July 2003, France

The British Council in France aims to win recognition for the UK's values, ideas and achievements and nurture lasting, mutually beneficial relationships between France and the UK. In the arts, we present the best of contemporary British culture to young French audiences, develop partnerships with French arts bodies and support projects reflecting the diversity of UK culture. We are looking for an experienced arts manager to lead and develop our arts programme in France and contribute to our strategic objectives within UK/France cultural relations. You will facilitate and manage high quality events and projects working with partners and arts professionals in France and the UK, with direct responsibility for the performing arts and the visual arts, and will oversee two colleagues responsible for our work in film and literature. This is one of our main sectors of activity, delivering up to 100 arts projects each year in France. Working closely with colleagues in our Paris office and in liaison with our Arts Group in London, you will be expected to identify new opportunities and partnerships for the British Council in France, including imaginative projects to mark the centenary of the Entente Cordiale in 2004, promoting the UK's creative industries and responding to demands for new e-products and services. To achieve this, you will need considerable knowledge and experience of managing projects within the performing arts and visual arts world in the UK, working strategically with partners to achieve high impact and a proven record in working under pressure, managing a small team, and evaluating the impact of arts activity on target audiences. Good spoken French is essential and will be assessed at interview. The post will be located in our Paris office, on France-based terms, reporting to Director France.
