UNESCO General Conference to consider cultural instruments

IFACCA/Artshub,
18 July 2003, France

The 32nd session of UNESCO's General Conference, to be held in Paris from September 29 to October 18, will consider two international cultural 'instruments': the Convention on Cultural Diversity, and a preliminary draft international convention on the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage. The Agenda for the 32nd General Conference is available HERE. The inclusion of the Convention on Cultural Diversity was recommended by the Executive Board of UNESCO at its 166th session in April (CLICK HERE). The Convention on Cultural Diversity is a legal instrument that will protect the rights of governments to enact domestic policies and measures to support the full range of cultural expression. The draft convention on the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage considers the safeguarding of oral traditions and expressions, language, performing arts, social practices, rituals and festive events, knowledge and practices about nature and the universe, and traditional craftsmanship. A copy of the draft can be found HERE . For further information, CLICK HERE.
