The third UNESCO meeting of international experts on the safeguarding of Iraqi cultural heritage was held in Tokyo, Japan on August 1. The meeting focused on short and long-term action to preserve the Baghdad Museum. The key points of discussion included equipping and opening laboratories in the museum, starting restoration of seriously damaged artefacts, and launching training programs for museum employees. It also considered broader measures to protect Iraqi cultural heritage, discussing the assessments provided by two UNESCO missions to Iraq earlier this year.
