Singapore National Arts Council’s annual statistical round-up of the performing and visual arts has showed significant increases in ticketed attendance and the number of events and exhibitions in 2002. Figures show that art patrons came out in full force last year to support music, theatre, dance, international acts and visual art, with total ticketed attendance reaching 1,084,192 – a 15% increase from 2001. Total number of performances grew by 26% to hit 5,177, and the number of exhibitions increased by 6% to 551. While the 2002 statistics augur well for the arts, the National Arts Council warns that figures for 2003 may be affected by the current economic climate, the impact of SARS, and cuts in private and public funding for the arts.
