Artists in figures: a statistical portrait of cultural occupations

Arts Council England,
17 September 2003, United Kingdom

Artists’ employment patterns show substantial differences from those of the rest of the working population. In 2002, Arts Council England commissioned the Warwick Institute of Employment Research at the University of Warwick to carry out an analysis of the pattern of artists’ working lives. Artists in figures: a statistical portrait of cultural occupations by Rhys Davies and Robert Lindley presents a statistical analysis of artists’ employment in England. It provides information on the size of the pool of artistic labour, artists’ employment status, employment tenure, unemployment, their working hours, pay and multiple job-holding. It also describes the characteristics of artists; their gender, age, educational qualifications and where they live. The report is one of a series to support the Arts Council of England’s commitment to the individual artist and maker. Implementing Droit de Suite(artists’ resale rights) in England was published in May 2002; Artists, taxes and benefits: an international review in December 2002; and A balancing act: artists’ labour markets and the tax and benefit systems in January 2003.
