A record number of entries have been received from young musical talents for Singapore’s biennial National Piano and Violin Competition, the Singapore National Arts Council reports. Over 200 submissions were lodged for the 2003 event, the highest number of entrants since the classical music competition began in 1997. The contest is dedicated to developing the performing skills of musicians in Singapore, improving musical standards and identifying young talents. ‘The over-whelming response to this year’s competition is indicative of the growth of the competition and the increasing interest in classical music. The international practices set in this competition will poise our young talents for even more demanding music competitions overseas and raise the standards and appreciation of classical music in Singapore,' said Elaine Ng, Deputy Director (Arts Capability Development), Singapore National Arts Council. A panel of six distinguished adjudicators will conduct masterclasses in addition to their judging duties. The National Piano and Violin Competition will be held from December 7-18.
