The South Project

IFACCA/Artshub,
03 December 2003, Australia

The South Project is aiming to strengthen relations and cultural interactions in the southern hemisphere, a region emerging from long periods of civil conflict and colonialism and too often engaging with the north than along the southern latitudes. The project will begin in July 2004 with an international forum in Melbourne, bringing together a number of cultural producers and practitioners from around the world and giving participants the opportunity to present their personal and professional perspectives of the south. The South Project will culminate in 2008 with exhibitions, performances, a publication and a festival celebrating the cultures of the south and the developments of the project. Though managed by Craft Victoria, the overall focus of the project is on the visual expression of culture – be it visual arts, design, architecture or craft – and the South Project aims to be a place for visual artists to go between southern countries and explore symbolic links. Other art forms, such as music, writing and performance are included as creative stimulus. Expressions of interest are welcome from individuals and organisations from all disciplines and geographical regions. More information is available at www.southproject.org.
