A group of Belizean woodcarvers and other handicraft producers met on Saturday, November 29 at the University of Belize to establish the Belize Woodcarvers and Handicraft Producers Association (BWHPA). The primary objective of the Association is to organise woodcarvers and other handicraft producers nationwide into one body to promote Belizean made Arts and Craft, and preserve their rightful place in the Belizean tourism industry. Key issues for the newly formed entity include the role of Belizean handicraft in tourism, the impact of imported handicraft on local producers, financial assistance for the development of Belizean handicraft, access to quality materials, and the role of the Belizean government in securing the future of Belizean handicrafts.
