UNESCO’s Assistant Director General for Culture, Mounir Bouchenaki, has praised recent restoration and extension projects of the combined town planners of Cuba. In a formal press conference, Bouchenaki urged, 'we must disseminate Cuba’s example in the world'. The Algerian archaeologist went on to discuss UNESCO’s commitment to the conservation of oral and immaterial heritage of the planet, stressing the need to remain vigilant on this point. 'The architectural heritage of Cuba is not the object of restoration and rescue for the sole purpose of its museum status, but also such that it can be enjoyed by those who live in the areas.'
