Moroccan cinema is heralding a new era, thanks to the arrival of a new commission for assisting film production and the innovative approach of Noor Eddine Saïl, head of the Cinematographic Centre of Morocco. The recently innaugurated Commission for the Funds of Assistance to Cinematographic Production, is composed of eleven specialists, including representatives from the academic, political, artistic, financial, distribution and journalistic sectors. The team will meet three times per year (as opposed to two under the previous system), ensuring more films are assessed and, hopefully, assisted. Noor Eddine Saïl sees pro-activity as the key to unlocking the potential of Moroccan cinema - more projects means greater possibility of return and a more vibrant film economy. This sentiment is reflected in the budget for cinema this year – in excess of thirty million dirhams - it dwarfs previous government level assistance. Saïls' revolutionary philosophy in financing the industry is behind the sweeping changes in Moroccan cinema. The leader argues that money awarded to the sector is not a hand out, rather an intelligent investment, since it generates a multitude of activities and supports hundreds of families for a year.
