Shine Kandjimbo, the Angolan Cultural attaché in Portugal, has made a plea for means to boost cultural patronage favouring Angola. Kandjimbo spoke at a gathering on Open Cultural Marketing on the topic of ‘Cultural diplomacy and the internationalisation of Angolan culture’. In his speech, the writer explained why funds derived from patrons are critical to the preservation of Angolan heritage and culture, recommending extra incentives for those who give within the cultural arena. ‘The statute of patronage in the Portuguese legislation is based on donations in cash or in money granted without compensation or obligations of a financial or commercial character to their private or public authors’, he said, comparing the situation to Angola, where only a handful of companies contribute financially to certain sectors of national culture. According to Kandjimbo, cultural patronage of enterprises is the best way to align national economic interest with cultural goals. He suggested that State guidelines making this more appealing would serve all parties. For further information in French, CLICK HERE.
