The Arts Council of Wales has earmarked £2.7 million to redevelop a major performing Arts Centre – the largest award made by the Council in 2004. The Capital Lottery grant will assist with the redevelopment and refurbishment of the Torch Theatre in Pembrokeshire, a theatre, opera, dance, jazz, cinema and visual art hub for 27 years. The building, constructed in 1977 is in need of a major refurbishment in order to continue to deliver and develop its wide range of activities and to enable the award-winning Torch Theatre Company to have access to proper rehearsal and stage facilities. Said Peter Tyndall, Chief Executive of Arts Council of Wales: ‘I am always amazed by the ability of the Torch to achieve the highest levels of artistic excellence on such a small amount of investment. The theatre has a crucial role to play in the development of touring theatre throughout Wales, and will provide access for the people of Pembrokeshire to some of the best drama production in Wales. I would like to pay a personal tribute to the Torch Artistic Director, Peter Doran for his vision and commitment to driving the project forward’. Minister for Culture, Welsh Language and Sport Alun Pugh endorsed the Council’s support of the venture, recognising the centre's vital contribution to the performing arts in Wales. ‘This funding will ensure that the Torch Theatre continues to maintain its reputation as a venue for high quality arts productions as well as providing community facilities for the people of Pembrokeshire to enjoy,’ he said. The project will involve the refurbishment and extension of the existing Torch Theatre building and adding a second versatile auditorium. There will be new facilities for local community arts groups, a new restaurant, improved cinema, gallery and conference facilities. A major part of the development will be improved and wider access for all to all parts of the building. ‘We very much welcome the news of the Lottery grant,’ said Torch Artistic Director, Peter Doran. ‘Not only is it a major step forward in our fundraising towards our development programme but it also underlines the Arts Council’s faith in the Torch as a major player in the development of the performing arts in Wales.’ For further information, visit www.artswales.org
